Rapid changes and growth in the metropolitan rail network have prompted a call to review the safety of all Wellington and Auckland rail pedestrian crossings.

The call is one of three recommendations outlined by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission following the death of a pedestrian at Morningside.

Chief Commissioner Helen Cull QC said they've suggested local changes but also want to make sure pedestrian safety keeps up with changes.

She said more newer and quieter electrical trains have been introduced and there has been a "substantial increase in train patronage in Auckland."
