The Greens are calling for a navy vessel to be sent to watch Japan's whaling operation.

Japan said it's going back the Southern Ocean looking for whales after a one-year hiatus.

The Government has made it clear it condemns any move to resume whaling, but the Greens said a verbal telling-off isn't enough.

Greens spokeswoman Eugenie Sage said it's not enough for the government to verbally condemn Japan's whaling practice.

She said the government needs to send a navy vessel to monitor Japan's practices, and ensure they are within international law.

"The International Court of Justice has clearly said that Japan's whaling, scientific whaling, is illegal. Now we need to make sure that it obeys international law and that its research doesn't involve harming or killing whales."

Green MP Eugenie Sage said any country opposed to whaling needs to show some backbone, and follow up condemnation, with action.
