Bus drivers take action - but no walk-out

Bus drivers will be taking action today - but not in the usual way.

Instead of a walk out, which they say they would disrupt their customers, 1000 drivers in the SuperCity zone will be actioning a 'work to rule'.

They hope to show their employers how much extra they do, and how many contractual protocols they don't have time to do.

Head delegate for First Union Phil Morgan said drivers will be following their contracts with the strictest of detail.

"In the real world, a work to rule is a very exact set of rules as to how you go about a job...how you get onto a bus, how you check a bus, start it, take it out of the yard."

Morgan said fatigue is rampant in their industry - and drivers want their runs restructured and more rest time to cope.

He stated that bus drivers work "very, very long days - up to thirteen hours."

"I, myself today have just finished a duty which had nine hours, forty-one minutes behind the wheel - that's a long time to be driving a bus."

The drivers don't currently have plans to stage a walk out.
