Gerry Brownlee has showcased some high tech gear that's being used to develop the Red Zone in Christchurch's Port Hills.

The Minister Supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration says the technology is a world-first.

Remote controlled excavators were developed to handle geo-technical risks in the area.

Augmented reality glasses and virtual reality goggles are being used to help the contractors understand the hazards at the site, before a visit in 3D.

The images in the headsets show rockfall hazards, road boundaries and escape routes.
