A group of Niwa scientists is braving Antarctic waters in an attempt to understand why Blue Whales are attracted to that area.
The team is half way through its six week voyage, and has been listening to low frequency whale songs to track the animals movements.
Project leader Richard O'Driscoll told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking the voyage has a number of environmental and research objectives.
He says they were tracking a pod of whales overnight and hope to spot them today.
