Blind community outraged at subsidy change

Members of Christchurch's blind community are furious they haven't been properly informed about changes to the Total Mobility transport cards.

Environment Canterbury issues the cards which now have to be shown at the start of a taxi journey.

Blind Citizens Committee member John Newman said not everyone has been told about the change and it's not good enough.

"When I asked why a letter wasn't sent out to members holding a total mobility card, they said they intended to send one out in the next two or three weeks."

He said members weren't told about changes, which resulted in problems.

"So one of our members who got in touch with me told me the driver would not accept the card at the end of the journey and made him pay full price on his taxi fare."

Environment Canterbury are claiming it's not their fault Total Mobility card users haven't been told about the changes, as it's the taxi drivers' responsibility.

Spokeswoman Katherine Trought said they've made it crystal clear to taxi drivers they have to ask for the card at the start.

"The taxi operators have actually been telling their drivers that they must ask every passenger whether or not they have a total mobility card, so they're not taking any risks and will ask every customer."

They'll refund anyone who's missed out in the confusion.
