Blenheim water declared safe after chemical fears

Local council tests have shown that the Blenheim town water supply is in the clear following concerns about chemical contaminations.

Compounds that were used to fight flammable liquid fires were discovered in waterways near the Woodbourne airbase in Blenheim last week.

At the time, the Minister for the Environment David Parker announced an investigation into potential water contamination after the levels of the compounds PFOS and PFOA were found to be above guidelines on groundwater.

While the results of that investigation are expected to be available in mid- January, Marlborough District Council spokesperson Stephen Rooney said the town water supply comes from an aquifer which travels under the Woodbourne base and is safe to drink.

Residents near the base with private water sources were still having tests done and the Ministry for the Environment is advising that they switch to bottled water.
