Beef and Lamb New Zealand are hoping to minimise the impact of Brexit on our meat industry.

Representatives from the group are in Europe meeting with British and European Union farming representatives.

Chairman James Parson said the EU is our most valuable red meat market, accounting for over $2 billion in trade last year.

"We don't want to see any erosion of our current market access arrangements. It's worth a significant amount to the New Zealand economy and New Zealand farmers."

Mr Parson said the organisation meets yearly with it's European counterparts, but this year it's even more important.

"One of the things that we cover off is the importance of New Zealand lamb on the shelf counter seasonally to keep it in the forefront of consumers' minds. The locals just cannot supply lamb 12 months a year to keep it on the supermarket shelf."
