Barriers haven’t been enough to stop motorists using a central Auckland cycle-way which has been promoted as world-leading, and put forward as a flagship of the national cycle-way network championed by Prime Minister John Key.
Auckland Transport has introduced soft barriers some road intersections of Nelson Street Cycleway, after a Newstalk ZB investigation found the cycleways, which are separated from the road itself, are used by a range of vehicles.
But an ongoing six-month Newstalk ZB investigation has found motorists are continuing to drive down the cycleway every day, often just metres from Auckland Transport parking officers.

The Nelson Street Cycle-way is one of several cycle-ways being installed to make it safer for cyclists to get around, but footage shows cyclists are still being put in danger by motorists who are using the cycle-ways as parking bays or fast lanes.
Mr Key and Transport Minister Simon Bridges cut the ribbon on the central city Quay Street cycle-way earlier this month, seven months after opening the nearby Nelson Street cycle-way.
