The Bakers and Pastrycooks' Union has sounded the alarm about an industry "under siege".
It follows fierce competition between the country's two main supermarkets which has seen the price of bread drop at times this year to just a dollar a loaf.
Union secretary Norm Holley says brands in the middle-to-upper price bracket are not selling as a result..
He warns that means the country's two biggest bakers are in a position where jobs could eventually be lost.
