Auckland is showing off to the Commonwealth's top sporting bosses this week.

The Commonwealth Games Federation is holding its annual General Assembly in the city this week.

The event is being hosted by the New Zealand Olympic Committee, as well as Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development.

ATEED chief executive Brett O'Reilly said he'd certainly be interested in seeing the games in Auckland again, if central Government was keen to work on a bid together.

"New Zealand certainly has an aspiration to host the Commonwealth Games in the future, and so we want to make sure they see the changes that have happened over recent times."

However, he added "the cost of a Commonwealth Games is very significant, so without a central government partnership it's unlikely to city would want to pursue it in it's own right."

Auckland last hosted the games in 1990.

Meanwhile the Commonwealth Games Federation has voted unanimously to increase the number of compulsory sports at future Games.

The sports programme will increase from 10 to 16 from the 2022 Commonwealth Games onwards.
