Auckland Council wants power to decide councillor numbers

Auckland Council is asking for the power to determine the number of councillors it has.

The super city council was set up in 2010 with a mayor and 20 ward councillors.

However, unlike other councils, it can't change the number of councillors it has.

A council working group has recommended a law change allowing council the council to decide how many councillors it needs.

The group says the current structure may work well now, but future councils should have the ability to make changes as and when they see fit.

Councillors will vote today on whether to put the recommendation to central Government.

A new bylaw covering Auckland's stormwater system will also be put to a final vote of Auckland councillors this morning.

It will be the first time the region's stormwater will be governed by a single set of regulations.

The bylaw will cover both public and private stormwater systems and stormwater devices on private land.

It will allow the council to manage activities on private property that have adverse impacts on the public stormwater network.

It will also enable the council to develop stormwater controls for specific areas and local issues.

Councillors will also discuss the final set of region-wide bylaws to be introduced, as part of Auckland's amalgamation process.

These include consistent rules for freedom camping, wharves, on-site wastewater and billboards in former Auckland City.

They're also considering the rules construction activities in the road corridor and public places, and electric and barbed wire fences on property next to public land.
