Members of the New Zealand Army have been working hard to dispose of over two thousand kilograms of World War Two explosives in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Operation Render Safe, which ran from the 5th of October until the 15th of November, involved six countries including eight Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians and two medics from New Zealand.

Defense Force Bomb Disposal Team's Captain Richard Capel says explosives can become unstable over time and could pose a risk to locals.

"A lot of the bombs that were in this area were still around areas where there were schools and villages, and also a lot of contamination in the farmland and agricultural area," he said.

Captain Capel says the locals were amazing and very glad to have them there to help.v
