An animal welfare group protesting the Waikato Rodeo hopes to educate the younger generations on how to treat animals.

The Waikato Rodeo was supposed to be going ahead today, but bad weather has postponed it until March 11th, something Direct Animal Action is happy about.

Spokesperson Amie Wolken says rodeos are barbaric and they believe they will be banned in New Zealand in the near future.

Ms Wolken said they will be protesting at the March rodeo as a lesson to children "to treat animals with kindness and compassion".

"These are lessons rodeo don't teach, obviously, with the way that they treat animals," Ms Wolken said.

In January, Direct Animal Action protested outside the Warkworth Rodeo north of Auckland. Around 70 supporters of the group held placards, and asked people to boycott the event.
