New Zealand is to continue providing support for Afghanistan's national army.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced a deployment of five mentors and three support staff to the Afghan National Army officer Academy has been extended until December next year.

"It's part of an officer training program that's been running for a number of years.

"Just making sure that we're contributing to the Afghani army getting a good supply of professionally trained officers."
