A mecca for star-gazing tourists is being celebrated with the release of a new book.
The Mt John University Observatory at Tekapo opened in 1965.
Co-author John Hearnshaw says it's known as one of the most beautiful astronomical observatories in the world.
"We're a little bit further south than any other observatory, so we have a particularly good view of the southern stars.
"And we occupy a longitude, which is fairly unique as well."
The book outlines the observatory's history, and includes almost two-hundred images.
