Port Chalmers is looking to fight proposed changes by Foodstuffs to re-brand its New World a Four Square.

Some locals believe this will see a number of jobs lost, as well as causing an increase in grocery costs for those who choose to shop locally.

Ryan Jones is the man behind a movement to stop the change and can't understand why it would be downgraded.

"The Port Chalmers supermarket in always busy...you go past or you go in there and it's always full of people.

"During cruise ship season there's always tons of tourists and ship's crew in there."
