Otago Federated Farmers says there's been a lift in morale for farmers since the drought announcement was made.

The Minister for Primary Industries made the call to declare a medium level drought a couple of weeks ago.

Otago president Stephen Korteweg says the recognition of the problem is the most important aspect.

"And the extra help that goes to the likes of the support trusts, they get an injection of funding so they can do a bit more to help people who are really struggling."

Stephen Koretweg says a number of farmers in North Otago are reducing how often they milk and drying their stock off.

Rainy days have been few and far between over the past few months.

Federated Farmers regional president Stephen Korteweg says North Otago is struggling.

"They've unloaded a lot of stock. I understand that they've gone to 16-hour milkings, which will be now looking to more to even going to once a day milkings."

There was a degree of relief recently when the Primary Industries Minister declared a drought for eastern and central Otago.
