Damage assessment after quake

Officials are continuing to assess the damage of yesterday's earthquake in Wanaka.

GeoNet said the magnitude 5.8 quake hit at 2:30pm, 30 kilometres north-west of Wanaka - at a depth of only five kilometres.

Visual inspections of water, wastewater and other critical infrastructure has found no damage or interruptions to supply.

Police said there were only a small number of broken windows and no major reported incidents. A number of bottles fell from the shelves at Wanaka New World, the town's only supermarket.

But Queenstown Lakes District Council spokeswoman Michele Poole says many public buildings are still being inspected.

"As a result of that, we have as a precaution closed the Arrowtown hall overnight and there'll be an engineers inspection of that."

The road to Mt Aspiring National Park, however, remains closed this morning because of the risk of rockfall.

"Our contractors are going to be doing an aerial inspection first thing in the morning so we expect an update by about ten [AM]," Poole says.

NZ Ski CEO Paul Anderson says safety measures are in place in case of a disaster on the mountains in the area.

"We operate Mt Hutt close to Christchurch," Anderson says, "so obviously we have had experience with this."

"The lift has safety processes in place where the lift will stop if the line comes out of alignment."
