A new app is providing a helping hand for mothers around Otago and Southland.
It's a collaboration between WellSouth Primary Health and the Southern DHB which offers options for breastfeeding-friendly facilities across the lower south.
Named BURP or Breastfeeding's Ultimate Refuel Place directs mothers to the closest breastfeeding friendly public place.
Wellsouth's project coordinator, Sophie Carty says the app does more than just inform mothers about whether venues are open to breastfeeding.
"It also lets mums know if there are other child-friendly things available, like change tables or toilets and play areas and toys."
Carty says this is a New Zealand first.
"There are lots of informal sort-of online forums where mums sort-of talk and recommend places that they think are good, but this is the first online formalised process in New Zealand."
She says they have more than 100 sites on the app around Otago and Southland.
