Work is about to start on improvements to one of the country's busiest stretches of road.

The Transport Agency is beginning a 50-million dollar project on State Highway One between Ngauranga and Aotea Quay.

Wellington Highways Manager Rod James says the upgrade will help ease congestion on a big headache area for motorists.

The work on a central barrier replacement gets underway on January 5th.
