Better understanding of stroke symptoms could help reduce the number of deaths and disabilities in Waikato.

A survey of 350 Waikato residents over the age of 45 shows there's a lack of understanding of stroke symptoms.

New Zealand Stroke Foundation CEO Mark Vivian says early detection is key for stroke patients.

He says if people don't recognise the signs of a stroke they're unlikely to act quickly enough to get people to hospital.
