The New Zealand Medical Association is warning the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement could leave the health sector vulnerable.
The Reducing Alcohol Related Harm report released today warns the Government TPPA agreements could undermine health initiatives.
Incoming NZMA Chairman Dr Stephen Child says actions or the threat of actions by corporations can prevent government from passing regulations in the sphere of public health.
"The investor-state dispute allows corporates to sue governments if they have adopted policy that negatively impacts their ability to market their products."
The proximity of alcohol stores is also being looked at as part of the report. While this is a significant issues, Dr Child admits proximity is only one of the many issues.
He believes the number of stores in an area can also create issues.
"But also the problem with high density then is you get competition and so you get cheaper alcohol."
