Northlanders are being urged to ensure they're up to date with immunisations after jumps in both mumps and whooping cough cases.

Eight cases of mumps have been confirmed among school-aged children in Dargaville.

It brings the total cases of mumps in Northland this year to 24, compared with six in 2016 and three in 2015.

There has also been an increase in cases of whooping cough in the region, with 48 this year and 25 of those have been in the town of Ngunguru.

One baby has been admitted to hospital for treatment, but has made a good recovery.

Northland Medical Officer of Health Dr Virginia McLaughlin is urging parents to ensure their families are up to date with immunisations.
