A case of mumps in the Nelson area is a timely reminder to check if you're vaccinated.

People who attended the Buller Festival in Murchison on the third or fourth of March may have been exposed to the disease, which can make those who aren't immunised very sick.

Dr Stephen Bridgman, Clinical Director of Public Health for Nelson and Marlborough, says the symptoms of mumps may take up to 25 days to appear, so those who attended the festival should have a heightened awareness.

He also says parents need to ensure their children have been vaccinated. Any parents are advised to check their children's Well Child health book of contact their family doctor to make sure their children have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, and are therefore fully immunised, Dr Bridgman says.

Early symptoms may include low-grade fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and a loss of appetite.

A previous case of mumps in the same region last year is not believed to be connected.
