Good first step but much more needs to be done.
The Government launched its Healthy Families Programme today.Â
The New Zealand Medical Association says much more needs to be done to tackle the country's obesity problem.
Chairman Doctor Mark Peterson acknowledges the initiative, which has a strong focus on exercise, is a step in the right direction.Â
However, he says other measures need to be taken such as greater protection from the marketing of unhealthy foods.
"Targeted advertising to children of food that's unhealthy should probably be banned. The tax on sugar sweetened beverages should be reviewed. Advertising fast food and the promotion of fast food, particularly to children, needs to be addressed as well."
