The organisation representing midwives is on the defensive over a coroner's criticism of their training.
Coroner Garry Evans says serious errors made by a midwife may have contributed to the death first-time mum Casey Nathan and her newborn in 2012.
He believes the errors are symptomatic of a lack of training.
But College of Midwives chief executive Karen Guilliland says training has been significantly improved in recent years and has shown to be effective.
She says even well-trained and experienced midwives may not have encountered the extremely rate condition that caused the deaths.
