Measles vaccinations a must for Morrinsville college

Staff and students at a Waikato high school will not be allowed on campus next week unless their measles vaccinations are up to date, because a student has contracted the highly infectious disease.

Morrinsville College has also cancelled all its sporting fixtures this weekend, and closed the school altogether on Monday.

From Tuesday, any teachers and students who can provide written evidence they have had two doses of MMR or measles vaccinations can return to class.

Anyone who can't prove they have been vaccinated can't go to the college until Tuesday the 24th of May, to allow 14 days from when they may have had contact with the sick student.

That rule doesn't include teachers born before 1969, as they are considered to have natural immunity - that means half of the school's teaching staff are fine.

"Many of the Medical Officer of Health instructions will cause significant disruption to learning, sporting fixtures and will inconvenience many parents," the school's acting principal Scott Jenkins said.

"We apologise in advance for this, however we have absolutely no say in this matter."
