Measles scare a timely reminder

A measles scare on a flight to Auckland is being used as a reminder to get immunised.

One of the passengers on Malaysia Airlines flight 131 from Kuala Lumpur on February 26 was infectious at the time of the trip.

Auckland Medical Officer of Health Julia Peters says most New Zealanders are protected from the disease.

"But if anyone is unsure about their immunisation status, they should check that with their general practitioner."

Dr Peters says the first signs of measles are similar to the common cold.

"So people have a cough, a temperature, a runny nose, sore eyes - and then after a week they start to develop a rash."

She says anyone who was on the flight, and feels unwell, should phone their doctor or the Healthline.
