It's hoped providing more information and resources to medical professionals will help bring the suicide rate down.

The Ministry of Health, District Health Boards, and community organisations have banded together to develop a new online system.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says about 500 New Zealanders take their own lives every year, with young people and Maori particularly at risk.

He says the new site will help health board develop plans to prevent and respond to suicide.
