Officials at Wellington Hospital are rostering on extra staff and bringing in more beds to help deal with being close to capacity.

Wellingtonians are being urged to resist going to hospital unless it's an emergency, as both Wellington and Kenepuru Hospitals are nearly full.

Capital and Coast DHB's Chris Lowry says those with non-urgent injuries face longer waiting times, and should first consult their GPs, or call HealthLine.
