Free counselling is being made available to Wellingtonians following the November 14 quake.

Those in the capital can now secure up to three face-to-face counselling sessions.

Wellington City Council community services manager Jenny Raines said some don't cope as well as others in the wake of a natural disaster.

People may need the counselling for a number of reasons, such as "being out of their home, or their business has had to move, or they really are just feeling stressed at being in the city post-earthquake," said Raines.

Raines said the aftermath of the quake is still ongoing, and people still need help.

"Some people are going to be out of their homes for up to three months, and it's very easy to manage that in the first few weeks, but as it becomes longer people need assistance to talk through what that means for them."

A significant number of aftershocks have hit the Wellington region following the November 14 quake.
