Concerns as rest home force residents out

A number of alarming issues have emerged at a Greymouth rest home which has forced its 24 residents to find somewhere new to live.

In a statement, HealthCERT manager Emma Prestidge says the group behind Kowhai Manor, Kiwiannia Care Limited, has lost accreditation because of ongoing risk and non-compliance issues.

A previous audit filed last March raised concerns about an incident of patient abuse that wasn't disclosed, while the correct processes for managing complaints weren't being followed.

The audit also found some nurses didn't hold current first aid certificates.

The West Coast DHB said it's full of empathy for the dozens of Greymouth rest home residents who will soon be without a home.

The DHB's director of nursing Karyn Bousfield said they'll be doing what they can to help the residents find somewhere to live.

"We'll be doing some assessments of those residents to ensure that we have a really good clinical picture of the care requirements going forward and to make sure that where they relocate to, that'll they'll be receiving the right level of care."

"There are plenty of beds available in Kiwiannia's other rest home Granger house, so there is more than enough beds for all of the residents if they choose, to resettle into Granger House."
