Changes to the way Pharmac decides which medicines it will fund, will force it to consider the impact of decisions on individuals and their families.

From late next year, its nine decision criteria will increase to 15 factors, which will also include Treaty of Waitangi considerations.

Chief executive Steffan Crausaz says they're not barriers.

He describes them as opportunities for Pharmac to learn what's important to New Zealanders.
