Autism New Zealand are supporting calls for a complete overhaul of disability services.
A report commission by the Nelson Marlborough District Health board was released yesterday, which looked into the care received by Ruby Knox, a 20-year-old autistic woman who was murdered by her mother.
The review found no evidence of any deficiency of care provided by DHB staff but identified many gaps at local and national levels.
Autism NZ chief executive Dane Dougan says having read the report, he thinks the whole system needs to be changed.
"I just hope it does create change, so from our perspective we will be pushing hard to makes sure this doesn't happen again."
IHC Director of Advocacy Trish Grant says she supports calls for an adult safeguarding service but it needs to go further.
"That safeguarding service needs to be independent and have statutory authority so that any concern about vulnerable adults and their situation can be investigated."
Grant does believe District Health Boards are setting up some good models of communication, but more work needs to be done
