Safe Kids Aotearoa warns there have been too many button battery-related deaths overseas and is urging parents here to be vigilant.
The government's urging manufacturers to make products safer - with around 20 children a year admitted to Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland over the batteries.
The government said it could take action if that number doesn't decrease.
It's giving manufacturers a chance to make the products safer before stepping in.
Safe Kids director Melissa Wilson said if a child swallows batteries or puts them in their ears, effects on the child's health are noticeable within hours.
"It's a growing issue because an increasing number of everyday devices contain button batteries.
"Parents and caregivers also have a role to play."
Parents are being warned that risky button batteries are everywhere.
Ms Wilson said button batteries are increasing in products we don't think about, like singing greeting cards.
"Parents need to ensure any devices in the home are secure."
