Holidaymakers looking to fill up before heading away on their Christmas holiday may find a nasty surprise at their local petrol station.

Several petrol stations in Auckland have run out of fuel including Z (zed) in Glen Eden, Royal Heights Mobil, and Gull in Birkenhead.

A spokesperson for Z Energy, Jonathan Hill, said strong demand for the construction and contracting sectors along with other factors, is putting strain on the logistics of getting fuel to certain places.

"This run of very long hot dry weather has meant that there has been very little interruption to work programs."

Hill said there is strain on the system to deliver fuel, so there will be none at some sites.

"With jet fuel demand at Auckland Airport at record levels, we're having to truck ground transport fuels further than we otherwise would."

He said with people travelling more at this time of the year, the demand is very high.

There were already lower supplies following the rupture of the Refining NZ pipeline at Ruakaka in September. The pipeline has been operating at 80 percent capacity since then and it could be early next year until it is fully restored.
