One song was always on our minds - holding the record for spending the longest time in the Top 40 charts for a New Zealand track.

Tiki Taane's 2008 hit "Always on my Mind" spent 55 weeks on the charts.

He admits it's still an amazing honour to be recognised.

"I've been down playing it, just going 'ah yeah, whatever'. I was actually really excited. If you really think about it having a single that's been in the Top 40 the longest for one year and three weeks is actually astounding."

One of the country's first modern pop groups was acknowledged last night as the Top 40 charts celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Deep Obsession's three number ones, still hold the record for a local act.

Recorded Music New Zealand CEO Damian Vaughan admits it's easy for us to laugh at their music now, but they still played a big part in our music history.

"40 years of the charts, you know, they're a reflection of music consumption. There's wacky moments in those 40 years. The song from 10 years ago isn't at all popular now, but it was at the time."

Vaughan maintains one of his favourites is Scribe, whose song "Stand Up" holds the record for most weeks at number 1 with 12.

"It blew my mind that New Zealand could do hip hop really well and it was accepted by the larger poulus in terms of New Zealand hip hop being fantastic."
