The New York Police Department says it's ready to make an arrest in the sexual assault case against Harvey Weinstein.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce says police have gathered considerable evidence, but it's up to the District Attorney to decide if the disgraced film producer is indicted.

The probe comes after Boardwalk Empire actress Paz de la Huerta said in October Weinstein had raped her twice in 2010.

Detectives have since travelled to Paris and Los Angeles to interview De la Huerta and others, and sought phone, business and medical records.

Boyce says witnesses are prepared to testify before a grand jury, which would determine whether Weinstein is indicted.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County DA’s office is reviewing five cases against Weinstein - two from Beverly Hills and three from Los Angeles.

The news comes as a survey reveals the extent of sexual harassment in the New Zealand film industry.

The survey says more than 60 percent of women in the local industry have experienced sexual harassment at work, usually by someone senior to them.

Screen Women's Action Group spokeswoman Emma Slade says the group has held two forums in Auckland and Wellington to "break the silence" around the issue.

She says the forums heard unacceptable behaviour - from creepy comments and jokes through to sexual assault - are part of a culture which has to change.

Slade says a snapshot survey the group is running has shown 66 per cent of respondents have encountered sexual harassment, usually by a person senior to them at work.
