Kiwi pop star Lorde has given drizzle-soaked Auckland fans three more mysterious clues hinting she will be releasing new music on Friday.

The 20-year-old tweeted a map of central Auckland on Wednesday night, encouraging her followers to gather in three locations from 9.30pm.

"I've organised a few more little glimpses at what's coming. If you want to know more, consult the map," Lorde wrote.

The three spots indicated included Mayoral Drive, the beach end of Hamilton Road in Herne Bay and the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Road.

Despite light drizzle across Auckland, about 50 people turned out at the Hamilton Road site by the deadline - but ended up being instructed (over Twitter) to go to nearby Herne Bay Beach instead after 15 minutes of silence.

Fans there were treated to a beach lit up in green, with what appeared to be lyrics on a light box and a drone buzzing over the water.

Two fans were so enraptured by the display that they went for a quick dip in the green-tinged surf.

The crowd near the town hall were treated to a projection of the words 'GREEN LIGHT' and a short clip of music with vocals on a green-lit wall, ending in a reference to March 3, 2017.

On Ponsonby Road, the inside of a parked, old, white hatchback began flashing bright green, while smoke poured from the vehicle.

The clues follow an enigmatic 15-second advertisement played on Kiwi television on Monday and an equally mysterious clip on a website, both also referring to the date March 3.

The singer released her first album, Pure Heroine, in 2013 and the follow-up has been hotly anticipated at home and abroad.
