Christchurch's hospitality sector is expected to get a significant boost from this week's kapa haka festival in the city.

The festival has been dubbed the "Maori Olympics" by organisers, and is expected to pull a crowd of up to 30,000 people over the next four days.

Hospitality Association Canterbury Branch President Peter Morrison says the city's still bustling with Cricket World Cup fever, and this will add an extra layer to the celebrations.

"Accommodation wise it's going to be big probably more for motels and things because they're travelling in groups.

"But bars and restaurants are going to be fantastic."

Project manager Rangimarie Parata Takurua says as a way of acknowledging the support shown to Christchurch following the Canterbury earthquakes, guests from around the country will be gifted to a special treat.

"We're going to feed them with our kai.

"We have things like Bluff oysters coming from bluff, koura coming from Kaikoura and mussels coming from Port Levy."

The event will be held in North Hagley Park.
