One of modern country music's greats, Don Williams, has died in the US following a short illness.

He was nicknamed country's Gentle Giant, enjoying a successful career in singing and songwriting across six decades.

Seventeen of his recordings made number one on the charts, including 'I Believe In You'.

His final live performance was last year, when he told the audience it was time to hang up his hat.
