A New Zealand festival descending on Christchurch next year is expected to generate over $6 million for the region's economy.

The world's largest Kapa Haka festival, last held in Christchurch nearly 30 years ago will bring over 4000 performers and supporters to the city in March.

The four-day competition will see 45 teams selected from New Zealand and Australia battle it out to be the Te Matatini national Kapa Haka champion.

Chief executive Darrin Apanui says Christchurch City Council and the Waitaha Cultural Council put in an emotional bid two years ago to host the event.

"It was a way of saying thank you to the nation for the support that was given to them during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes."

Darrin Apanui says all 2000 performers have found accommodation in homes, marae and billets through out the city.
