UPDATED 7.11pm: Green MP and sexual violence victims advocate Jan Logie is welcoming news Chris Brown won't be coming to New Zealand.

"Oh what a shame" she said sarcastically, adding "I mean I think it's good that he's read the environment in New Zealand."

Brown has announced a cancellation of his New Zealand and Australian tour.

The controversial R&B star, who was convicted of domestic abuse against his former partner pop star Rihanna, was set to play here in just over two weeks, after four concerts across the Tasman.

But a statement from his promoter says those shows will no longer take place.

Chris Brown and the promoters remain positive that the tour will take place in the near future.

The statement says Chris Brown wishes to express his deepest gratitude to the fans for their support and looks forward to a successful tour in the near future.

Ticketholders can get full refunds.

Last week it was reported that Chris Brown's application for a visa to enter Australia had been declined because of his domestic violence history.

Brown drew the support of prominent figures such as former Maori Party leader Tariana Turia, church showman Brian Tamaki, and Women’s Refuge CEO Merepeka Raukawa-Tait who wanted him to come to New Zealand if he could prove he had reformed his ways.

Associate Immigration Minister Craig Foss said the New Zealand government applied no pressure.

"Well I didn't see the application, not my office."
