An android robot has taken over the role of a retail receptionist at a major department store in Tokyo.Â
At the moment 'Aiko' can only read out programmed scripts, but she will soon receive an upgrade that will see her interact on a more personable level with customers.
The department store's marketing manager, Gakudai Nanba, believes the robot is a great alternative to touch panel display directions.
"We hope the robot will help spark conversation between people...I'm hoping that this will become something that would spark a giggle or two."
Her human co-worker, Mio Sakai, admits her co-worker has had a promising first day on the job.
"I'm happy and I feel honoured I could work beside her."
Aiko has already received a promotion. After her stint as receptionist, she will act as a guide within the department store until the 5th of May.Â
