Updated 12.16pm: Details of the accident in West Auckland which has left a young girl fighting for her life in Starship Hospital are beginning to emerge.

The six-year-old appears to have been crossing Titirangi Road on a green-man pedestrian signal when she was struck by a car shortly after nine this morning.

The young female driver of the car that struck her stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries.

Inspector Willy Taylor says the child was taken to hospital with very critical injuries.

He says Police are currently speaking with the driver and carrying out a scene examination, to determine how the girl came to be struck by the vehicle.
