The body of a woman has been recovered from a car that went off the road and into the water in Christchurch.

The car went off Main Road between Mulgans Track and Clifton Terrace in the Clifton area of Sumner just before 6 last evening.

A man, who is related to the woman, was able to get out of the car and has received medical treatment.

The woman's body was located within half an hour of the Police Dive Squad entering the water this morning.
