Three people are in a serious condition after a two car crash on State Highway 2, between Tauranga and Waihi.

A fire communications spokesman said one person was trapped in a vehicle at Apata, on SH2.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6pm.

SH2 is closed.

There are diversions in place via Apata Station Road but delays are likely.

Police say two people are now in hospital with serious injuries.
