A 16-year-old male skateboarder has died in a hit-and-run in the Auckland suburb of New Lynn.

Police and ambulance services were called to the scene on Rua Road just after midnight on Sunday.

Detective Inspector John Sutton says police suspect it was a hit-and-run between 11.30pm and midnight.

He's appealing for the driver to come forward and for any information from the public, including anyone who has been asked to fix a vehicle.

A post mortem examination is under way and members of the serious crash unit have been at the scene.

Emergency services administered first aid to the teenager who was found unconscious on the road but he later died.
