There's been a string of road smashes across the South Island, and several people have been killed or injured as a result.

A bus that crashed last night in North Canterbury has been pulled out of the Waiau River.

Police were called just before 8pm last night, following reports of the bus going into the water from Rotherham Road.

The driver - who was the only one in the bus - died at the scene.

Contractors dragged the bus out of the river just before 6am.

Investigators have left the scene and the road is now open.

Two people have been flown to hospital after a single vehicle crash in Clutha district, near Gore.

It happened just before 3am in Cranleigh Road, Rongahere.

St John paramedics treated four people at the scene.

One of them was in a serious condition and three had minor injuries.

A police spokesman says two helicopters were called and two people were flown to Dunedin Hospital.

Two people were taken to hospital after a crash at Oamaru, and four people went to hospital after a crash at Timaru.

One person was badly hurt in a crash near Bluff.
